The war in the center of Europe has been going on for three months

Exactly three months ago, on February 24, Russia started the war in Ukraine. In Russia itself, this is called a “special military operation” and at the state level, all actions of the country are not officially called war. However, according to the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Russia has already lost nearly 30,000 soldiers killed, about 80,000 wounded, and broken equipment by more than $10 billion. British intelligence claims that in three months of war, Russia has suffered greater losses than in 10 years of war in Afghanistan. There was no victorious war in three days.

At the same time, Ukraine’s losses are much greater. No matter how positive the reports of the top authorities may seem, the situation in Ukraine is quite difficult in all directions.

  • To begin with: Russia has occupied about 1/5 of the entire territory of Ukraine, which is almost three times more than the situation as of February 23: under Russian control – 125,000 km². The territories of Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv regions are temporarily occupied, excluding Donetsk and Luhansk regions and Crimea.
  • According to various estimates, more than 13 million people left their homes, and up to 6 million went abroad. This is the largest wave of migrants in Europe in decades.
  • According to the UN, during the war among civilians killed 3,930 adults and 257 children, about the same number were injured. But even the UN itself admits that it cannot count the number of civilians killed in areas where active hostilities are taking place, such as in Mariupol. According to the mayor of Mariupol, more than 20,000 were killed, according to representatives of the Azov regiment – more than 25,000.
  • Ukraine’s economy has faced a real shock: the blockade of ports, declining exports, shutting down businesses. By the end of the year, Ukraine’s GDP may decline by 45%, and total losses are already estimated at more than $1 trillion. Infrastructure losses – $97 billion.

The war in Ukraine has affected the whole world: Western experts are constantly talking about the food crisis that awaits countries in Africa and the Middle East. Due to the stopping of exports, the price of wheat has doubled since the beginning of the year. Ukraine is one of the five largest exporters of this crop and feeds 400 million people annually.

The most difficult thing is to accept the fact that no one has any idea when and under what circumstances the war could end. Earlier it was speculated that after the huge losses of the army, Putin would agree to peace, but today it is clear that he does not plan to stop the war. The Ukrainian side also announced the suspension of talks. The situation is further complicated by the fact that Russia will simply not leave the already occupied territories: they are actively building fortifications against possible counterattacks right now. At the same time, Ukraine is ready to at least talk about returning to the borders on February 23, more than 80% of the population does not support the idea of surrendering some territories. The Ministry of Defense points out that a counter-offensive will be impossible without additional weapons.

Six countries have already recognized the actions of the Russian army in Ukraine as genocide of the Ukrainian people. In the heart of Europe in the XXI century.
