The Warsaw-based healthtech startup Doctor. One has won the #Nephrohero competition, whose participants aim to develop chronic kidney disease (CKD) treatment. The startup will receive an €85,000 grant from AstraZeneca to develop and implement a pilot solution that will be able to help patients with CKD.

  • Founded in 2021 by Tomasz Rudolf and Maciej Malenda, Doctor. One develops a virtual clinic platform allowing patients to receive ongoing medical care from experienced professionals via online chat. The platform also provides secure storage for patients’ medical histories all in one place.
  • The Warsaw Health Innovation Hub initiated the competition in which Doctor. One’s project won the €85,000 grant. The evaluators, consisting of several state institutions, focused on the criteria like innovation, quality of care, and the real possibility of conducting a pilot project within 12 months.
  • Additionally to the grant from AstraZeneca, the startup can count on consulting support from the public and EIT Health InnoStars.

“We are glad that, as AstraZeneca, we were able to launch the first competition of this type as part of the Warsaw Health Innovation Hub and perhaps pave the way for other similar projects. WHIH is an excellent example of how, thanks to public-private cooperation, we can act to improve the Polish healthcare system,”

Wiktor Janicki, president of AstraZeneca Pharma Poland, comments on the project.
  • Doctor. One plans to engage family doctors and nephrology specialists to design a model of personalized, ongoing care for people at risk or with early-stage CKD, and test it on a group of 100 patients.

Earlier, AIN.Capital wrote about the previous round for Doctor.One. The startup secured €2.1 million for its virtual clinic solution development in May 2022. You can read it here:
