The US pet medical insurance provider Trupanion has acquired the Prague-based veterinary-centric insurance startup PetExpert. The amount of the transaction is not disclosed.

  • Founded in 2018 by Derek Cummins and Jan Moravec, PetExpert is an online pet insurance marketplace, which operates in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. More than 95% of veterinary hospitals in these countries have a connection to its platform. 
  • The Seattle-based Trupanion provides medical insurance for cats and dogs throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Puerto Rico and Australia. This acquisition of PetExpert will be the second in Europe for Trupanion, after the acquisition of Smart Paws, a German company that provides pet insurance.

  • The amount of the transaction is not disclosed, but it’s known that the transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2022. 
  • The deal will let PetExpert to expand Trupanion’s European presence in the Czechia and Slovakia, to expand into Belgium and Poland in the nearest future.
