Tartu-based healthtech startup Better Medicine has received a €2.5 million grant from the European Innovation Council’s Accelerator. The company automates the analysis of cancer CT scans and is co-founded by Estonians and Ukrainians.
- Better Medicine is a healthtech company developing AI and software tools used for medical imaging to help radiologists fight cancer. The company was co-founded in 2022 by a team of Estonian and Ukrainian researchers: Priit Salumaa, Dmytro Fishman, Bohdan Petryshak, Helena Ije, and Vitalii Lakusta.
- Dmytro Fishman who is also a lecturer in AI at the University of Tartu Institute of Computer Science says that the company was born thanks to high-level research in applying artificial intelligence. As the result, it started looking for practical solutions to make life easier for doctors and patients.
- In particular, the AI-powered solution is able to detect the metastatic spread of cancer in different organs throughout the body and assess disease progression and response to treatment. By reducing the time needed to diagnose cancers, the solution can save patients’ lives.
“It is really hard to overstate the importance of this accomplishment for our company, but also for the entire field. I could not be happier. Years of research are being put into practice for the sake of doctors and patients. This is really the main reason why I became a scientist,”
Dmytro comments on receiving the EIC grant.
- Before receiving the grant, Better Medicine managed to win €5,000 and legal mentoring from TGS Baltic at the Estonian startup festival sTARTUp Day in September 2022.
- Now, thanks to the fresh funds, the company is able to revolutionize cancer diagnostics using their powerful AI models.
