EU plans to ban Xbox and PlayStation sales in russia to prevent them from being used to control drones
Brussels is proposing to ban the sale of game consoles to russia to prevent them from being used by the russian military to control drones sent into Ukraine, as stated by Financial Times.
Specifically, products such as the Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox will be included in the list of restrictions to be published by the third anniversary of russia's full-scale invasion on February 22.
“We are really looking into all the types of things that help Russia to wage this war to put them on the sanctions list,” Kallas told FT. “Even the consoles for video games, because apparently these are the ones that they operate drones with.”
Though the biggest game console makers - Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony - already stopped selling in russia in March 2022, the new restrictions will target middlemen in EU countries who resell consoles, including used ones.
The sanctions require unanimous approval from all 27 EU member states. However, their approval can be complicated, as happened recently when Hungary threatened to veto the extension of the current restrictions because Ukraine terminated its gas transit agreement with Moscow.
