Romanian company Bonapp and Hungarian company Munch have announced a strategic merger to expand their efforts in reducing food waste across Central and Eastern Europe. The joint company is currently working on rebranding and selecting a new name with input from its teams, the Recursive reports.

Merger details

  • The merger of Munch and Bonapp combines operations in Hungary, Czechia, Slovakia, and Romania, forming a unified platform with 3.5 million app downloads and 6,000 retail partners.

  • The newly merged company, with nearly 100 employees, is projected to generate €7.5 million in revenue in 2024.

  • The merger aims to improve market reach, operational efficiency, and collaboration with retailers, while strengthening efforts to reduce food waste in the region.

“Our goal is to be the market leader and conquer more countries in CEE. We are eyeing Croatia next and we received good feedback from potential partners there,” says Kirill Perepelica, co-founder of Munch.

Further developments and expansions are expected in the coming months.

About Bonapp and Munch

Bucharest-based Bonapp was founded in late 2021 by Grégoire Vigroux, Diego Roy de Lachaise, and Luka Zivkovic. The startup combats food and beauty product waste.

The company's app, available on iOS and Android, connects users with local retailers, including grocery stores, restaurants, shops, gas stations, bakeries, coffee shops and hotels. Through the app, users can purchase products approaching their expiration date, at a 50% to 80% discount.

Budapest-based Munch, founded in 2020 by Botond Zsoldos, Bence Zwecker, Albert Wettstein, and Kirill Perepelica, is a platform where restaurants, bakeries, supermarkets, hotels, and other stores can sell their surplus food.

The sustainability-driven startup has the goal of making food rescue available to as many people as possible so that no good quality food goes to waste and prevents the emission of tons of greenhouse gases.
