‘Rock, Paper, Scissors,’ a film about the War in Ukraine, wins at BAFTA. Who else got the awards?

On February 16, the 78th British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTA) took place in London. The movie about the war in Ukraine, "Rock, Paper, Scissors", won the award in its category, according to the awards website.

The short film tells the story of an 18-year-old boy, Ivan, and his father, Bohdan, who works as a surgeon in a hospital in the East of Ukraine. After the fullscale russian invasion, Bohdan saves the lives of wounded soldiers and civilians, and his son takes up arms to save his father and the hospital's patients from the russian soldiers.

The movie was directed by German-born British director Franz Boehm. According to the creators, the story is based on real events and was filmed in cooperation with the people involved.

The role of Ivan was played by Ukrainian actor Oleksandr Rudynskyi, known in Ukraine for the TV series The First Swallows and the drama Stay Online. Ukrainian actor Serhiy Kalantai played the role of Ivan's father

"Rock, Paper, Scissors" won the nomination for Best British Short Film, competing with "The Flowers Stand Silently, Witnessing, "Marion," "Milk," and "Stomach Bug".

  • Supporting Actor: Kieran Culkin for "A Real Pain".
  • Director: Brady Corbet for "The Brutalist".
  • Outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer: "Kneecap".
  • Film not in the English language: "Emilia Perez".
  • Documentary: "Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story".
  • Animated film: "Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl".
  • Original screenplay: "A Real Pain".
  • Adapted screenplay: "Conclave".

The BAFTA Awards are considered the British equivalent of the American OSCARS. Last year, the Ukrainian film 20 Days in Mariupol by Mstyslav Chernov won the prestigious British award in the documentary category and went on to win the OSCARS, too.
