Meta has announced the launch of Project Waterworth, the world's longest underwater cable, which will span more than 50,000 kilometers (more than the circumference of the Earth) and connect five continents.
The project will provide high-speed connectivity between the United States, India, Brazil, South Africa, and other key regions.
It envisions the creation of three new ocean corridors with the high-speed connectivity needed to implement AI innovations around the world.
The cable will contain 24 pairs of optical fiber, whis is more than most modern systems (8-16 pairs). It will provide ultra-high bandwidth for data processing and artificial intelligence development.
Meta is also implementing advanced engineering solutions to improve the reliability of the cable. The cable will be laid at depths of up to 7,000 meters and will receive special protection in high-risk areas, such as coastal areas where damage from ship anchors is possible.
The total investment and the exact timing of the project were not disclosed. The report states only that "Project Waterworth will be a multi-billion dollar, multi-year investment.
Submarine cables carry more than 95% of intercontinental Internet traffic, enabling seamless digital communications, video, online transactions, etc.
Meta emphasizes that Waterworth will contribute to the expansion of economic cooperation, digital integration and open up new opportunities for technological development, especially in India, which is already actively investing in digital infrastructure.
