Adobe releases free version of Photoshop for smartphones

Adobe has introduced a new mobile version of Photoshop, the company said in a statement Tuesday, Feb. 25. For the first time, the application will be available in a free version.

  • The free version of the program is already available for iPhone users and will soon be available for Android.
  • The company has also launched a subscription to the premium plan of Photoshop app for $7.99 per month, the lowest subscription price in history.
  • Previously, the cheapest plan was $9.99 per month and was only available for the iPad.

The decision to release free Photoshop on smartphones comes in the face of competition from Apple and Google, which have integrated a number of image editing features into mobile operating systems.

According to Deepa Subramaniam, Adobe's vice president of creative applications marketing, the company wants to attract younger users for whom smartphones are the primary tool for capturing and editing content.

Even in the free version of the app, users will be able to layer photos, work with masks and add text. They can create covers for podcasts, playlists or YouTube videos.
