Instagram considers launching Reels as a separate app

Instagram is considering launching its Reels short-video feature as a standalone app, amid the uncertain future of Chinese-owned TikTok in the US.

According to The Information, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri discussed the idea with the company's employees this week.

In January, US President Donald Trump gave TikTok a 75-day reprieve to comply with a law signed by his predecessor, Joe Biden, that required the platform to be sold or banned.

At the end of January, US President Donald Trump announced that he was in talks with several parties about the possible acquisition of the social network TikTok and intended to make a decision on its future within the next 30 days.

Potential buyers include Oracle, Microsoft, Susquehanna International Group, General Atlantic, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR), Sequoia Capital and Perplexity AI.

In addition, Trump signed a decree to create a sovereign wealth fund within the next year. According to him, this fund can be used to buy the popular TikTok app.

The Biden administration claimed that TikTok, which is used by 170 million Americans, could be used by China as a tool for espionage and political manipulation.
