Finnish company SuperGround secures €2.5M in funding to tackle full utilization of fish products

SuperGround, a sustainability startup based in Helsinki, has secured €2.5 million in funding to expand its technology aimed at minimizing food waste. The investment was led by Hatch Blue Revolution Fund.

The company's patented process allows for the complete utilization of fish products, tackling the issue of discarding a substantial portion of farmed and caught fish instead of using it for just human consumption.

About SuperGround

  • SuperGround, established in 2021, has patented a unique technology that fully utilizes fish in the food industry, addressing the issue of up to 70% of caught or farmed fish currently being wasted as feed or fertilizer.
  • This innovative solution promotes a sustainable food system and can also be applied to poultry industry side streams, increasing its versatility and scalability across various food industry sectors.

Investment details

The Hatch Blue Revolution Fund is the lead investor. It is a Cork, Ireland-based investment fund, which provides funding for sustainable aquaculture farms, technologies, and seafood alternatives to generate competitive returns and promote healthier oceans.

“If the world will in fact run into a shortage of low-cost fish and poultry-based protein, which will depend heavily on how governments are going to subsidise mass animal production in the future and how vegetarian, vegan and cell-based alternatives will catch up, then SuperGround’s technology is perfectly placed to become a global standard in fish and poultry downstream processing,” says Carsten Krome, managing partner at Hatch Blue.

SuperGround intends to use the fresh funding to increase production capacity and establish new partnerships, especially within the European market. The company's goal is to minimize waste in the food industry and champion the use of sustainably sourced fish worldwide.
