OpenAI will soon start a beta test for its new feature called ChatGPT Connectors, which will allow subscribers of the Team plan to connect their Google Drive and Slack accounts to the company's AI chats.

Initially, the new feature will only be available to select business customers. TechCrunch writes citing insider documents. Later, the company plans to extend ChatGPT integration to other platforms, such as Microsoft SharePoint.

The document says that ChatGPT Connectors will allow employees to search for important work information in OpenAI AI chat in the same way that web search works in chat.

How will ChatGPT Connectors work?

  • ChatGPT Connectors will be powered by OpenAI's GPT-4o model, which can improve its answers based on internal company information. In terms of privacy, the document states that Slack and Google Drive permissions will be "fully respected" and "kept continuously up to date."
  • For example, ChatGPT Connector synchronizes membership information in private Slack channels, file permissions in Google Drive, and company directory data.
  • Employees won't be able to find content through ChatGPT if they don't have access to it in Google Drive or Slack. Administrators will also be able to choose which Slack channels and Google Drive files to sync. However, there is a downside - employees will receive "substantially different" responses to the same requests in ChatGPT.
  • ChatGPT Connectors does not support images in Google Drive files (e.g., Google Docs, Google Slides, PDFs, Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, and plain text files).
  • It can also only "read" data in Sheets and Excel spreadsheets, but not analyze them. Additionally, ChatGPT Connector cannot receive private messages or group chats in Slack and ignores messages from Slack bots.
