Elon Musk's Tesla has informed the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it is recalling nearly all of its Cybertruck electric pickup trucks - more than 46,000 vehicles manufactured from November 2023 to February 27 this year, Reuters reports.
Tesla itself is not disclosing the exact number of trucks delivered, but analysts estimate that the recalled vehicles make up a significant portion of the models manufactured.
The Cybertruck is being recalled in the US to fix a problem with the outer panel that can fall off while driving. This creates a road hazard and increases the risk of an accident. Tesla promises to replace the panels with a new unit that meets strength testing requirements.
The company says it is aware of 151 warranty claims that may be related to this issue, but no accidents or injuries have been reported. One Cybertruck owner has complained to the National Safety Administration about the problem.
Previously, there were rumors that Tesla had suspended deliveries of new pickups due to the peeling paint. The Cybertruck has been recalled seven times since its official launch in December 2023. In 2024, Tesla sold about 40,000 trucks, despite more than 1 million reservations.
Musk's automaker is going through a rough patch. Hedge funds betting on a drop in Tesla's stock have made $16.2 billion as the value of billionaire Elon Musk's company has halved in the past three months.
