Amid threats from US President Donald Trump that Canada could become the "51st state," the country has seen an increase in demand for local producers, Business Insider reports. However, this has also led to an increase in complaints about mislabeling and potential fraud.

According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), there was a 1050% increase in complaints about country-of-origin labeling in February 2025.

In particular, "Made in Canada" and "Product of Canada" on labels and in advertising. Typically, this label means that at least 98% of the ingredients are Canadian. If the products are not entirely Canadian, the label must include a description.

"The CFIA takes labeling issues seriously and wants to know about products that consumers think are labeled in a misleading manner," the agency said.

According to Business Insider, citing Google Trends data, the number of "Made in Canada" searches is at an all-time high. Traffic to the Made in CA website was also at a record high.

In March 2025, Canada imposed a 25% tariff on American goods. The decision came after US President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Canada and Mexico on February 1.
