A Minecraft Movie broke records with a massive $301 million opening weekend, becoming the highest-grossing video game adaptation in history and the highest-grossing US box office debut of 2025, Variety reports.

The film premiered worldwide on March 30.

A Minecraft Movie is shattering expectations

Prior to its debut, Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment projected an opening weekend gross of $70-80 million. However, the film dramatically exceeded expectations due to the high demand for family-friendly films and its PG rating, which encourages parental viewing.

In its opening weekend, A Minecraft Movie earned $157 million in the US and $144 million internationally, for a total of $301 million worldwide. Its production budget was $150 million, excluding marketing costs.

A Minecraft Movie surpassed the previous record holder, The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023), which opened with $146 million. It also surpassed the previous US box office leader for 2025, Captain America: Brave New World, which grossed $88 million in its opening weekend.
