British defense contractor Babcock to help Ukrainian military print equipment on 3D printers
The British defense company Babcock has received a contract from the Ministry of Defense of the United Kingdom to create a project that will allow the Ukrainian military to print military equipment on 3D printers. The company made the annoucement in a blog post
- As the prime contractor, Babcock will work with another British defense technology company, QinetiQ, to create digital drawings and computer-aided design files for military equipment that can then be used to print parts.
- Babcock explains that the technology support includes reverse engineering old parts to analyze their functionality and design, which will allow them to be digitally reproduced as needed. The digital files will allow the parts to be manufactured during combat using a variety of methods, including 3D printing.
"We aim to give Ukraine the capability to recreate the military parts that they need, where and when it really matters. This innovation builds on our engineering expertise and technology capability, giving us further opportunities to optimise 3D printing," said Tom Newman, CEO of Babcock’s Land Sector.
- The contract is said to be part of Babcock's ongoing commitment to support Ukraine. The company recently announced that it would continue to support the Ukrainian Armed Forces, particularly in the restoration of combat vehicles such as Challenger 2 tanks.
According to Militarnyi, in December 2023, Babcock was awarded a three-year contract to support and maintain two hunt-class mine countermeasures vessels, Cherkasy and Chernihiv, for the Ukrainian Navy. The company also established Babcock Ukraine LLC and opened an office in Ukraine, where a dedicated team will focus on supporting Ukrainian customers and industry partners.
Earlier this week, AIN reported that TEKEVER, a Portuguese defense tech company, opened a representative office in Ukraine, with plans to expand its staff and create training centers.
