The European Commission's proposal for trade countermeasures against the United States has received the necessary support from EU member states, the European Commission press service reports.
"The EU considers US tariffs unjustified and damaging, causing economic harm to both sides, as well as the global economy," the statement reads.
- Once the Commission's internal procedures are completed and the act is published, the countermeasures will come into force. The tariffs will be applied from April 15, 2025.
- At the same time, the European Commission said it was ready to negotiate with the United States to suspend the countermeasures.
- As a reminder, on April 3, 2025, the United States imposed a 10% tariff on imports from almost all countries. A 20% tariff was set for the European Union.
- At the time, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the new US tariffs "a serious blow to the global economy."
In addition, the EU warned that if Trump imposed tariffs, the United States would be subject to counter-tariffs. It was about $28 billion of tariffs on American goods. It is not yet known what tariff rate the EU voted for on April 9.
