Perplexity reaches agreements with Samsung and Motorola to integrate its AI assistant into smartphones
Perplexity is apparently negotiating with Samsung to integrate its AI assistant into the company's smartphones and other devices. In addition, they have already reached an agreement on similar cooperation with Motorola, Bloomberg reports.
Agreement with Motorola
The partnership with Motorola will be officially announced this month, according Bloomberg's sources. The company plans to unveil a new product in New York on April 24.
As part of the agreement with Motorola, the Perplexity assistant will be pre-installed on devices as an alternative to Google Gemini. In addition, a special customized interface will be developed for the updated Razr foldable smartphones. The manufacturer also plans to launch a marketing campaign to encourage users to try Perplexity.
Agreement with Samsung
Negotiations with Samsung are at an early stage and details are still being worked out. According to the sources, it will be possible to use Perplexity as a default assistant option or pre-install the application on Android devices. In addition, Samsung can actively promote the assistant as an option in the Galaxy Store, where other applications are downloaded.
The deal is complicated by Samsung's large partnership with Alphabet, which provides many AI features on the company's hardware and provides the default search engine. Nevertheless, the South Korean giant has been developing a relationship with Perplexity for several months now.
Its investment arm invested in the startup last year. And according to sources, it is now negotiating a new round of funding that could double its valuation to $18 billion. We are talking about a potential fundraise of $500 million to $1 billion.
Why is this important?
For Perplexity, which is trying to compete with such strong players as OpenAI and Google, the deals will be a significant breakthrough in brand development and gaining popularity in the US market. Although Motorola's share of the smartphone market is small, the company is gradually strengthening its position. Samsung, on the other hand, holds about 20% of the global market, according to IDC.
Earlier this year, Perplexity also announced a partnership with European telecommunications company Deutsche Telekom AG to create an AI smartphone. Perplexity will provide foundational AI technologies for that device, which is expected to be unveiled later in 2025.
In January, Perplexity launched a mobile assistant for Android devices. It can answer common questions and perform tasks on behalf of users, such as writing emails, setting reminders, booking tables, etc.
