Evacuation from Azovstal plant

In late April, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres visited Kyiv. Among the topics he discussed with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was the evacuation of civilians from Azovstal in Mariupol. According to him, as of today, there is progress in negotiations with Russia on the organization of a special corridor, which will be coordinated by the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross. The people who will be responsible for this have already left for Zaporizhzhia to organize it.

There are no details of the whole operation, the Ukrainian side only pointed out that there is progress in the organization of the evacuation. Moreover, it is not entirely clear whether the Ukrainian military on the plant’s territory will be evacuated.

Those who remained on the territory of Azovstal point out that the situation is worse than a “humanitarian catastrophe.” During the last days of April, bombs of up to 3 tons were dropped on the plant. As a result, one of the bombs struck the basement where were organized hospital operating room. Equipment and tools for operations destroyed. There is very little water and food left, almost no medicine or treatment. At the same time, the plant continues to be shelled.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was in Russia a few days ago, where he said he had agreed to organize an evacuation. While he was in Kyiv, several cruise missiles flew into the city. One of them exploded a kilometer from the location of the Secretary General. One person died in the house where the rocket hit, several others were injured.
