To Hold Kherson
One of the tasks that the Russian president has given to his military leaders is to keep Kherson at all costs. In fact, the city has been under occupation since the first days of the war, and there was no great resistance, as happened in Mariupol. Thanks to this, the city remained intact. Right now, there seem to be preparations for a referendum, as a result of which Russia wants to create another so-called republic – the KPR or the Kherson People’s Republic. The referendum is scheduled for mid-May.
Occupants try to transfer to Russia’s influence the city and the part of the region that is already occupied. In particular, rubles have been introduced in Kherson and the region since May 1, and some locals have been offered jobs for the occupiers for rubles as well. Occupants constantly disconnect Kherson from the mobile connection, destroying equipment of Ukrainian mobile operators, cutting cables for Internet connection, instead providing access to Russian mobile operators.
It is important to note that the region remains pro-Ukrainian and has nothing to do with the events in 2014 in Crimea. Ukrainians go to pro-Ukrainian rallies and try to stop Russian troops and Russian propaganda peacefully by refusing to cooperate with the occupiers. In some cities there is an active guerrilla movement.
The Ukrainian military leadership says that Kherson and the region will definitely be liberated in the near future, as evidence – counteroffensive and deoccupation of the region’s villages. It is also important from the strategic point of view: strengthening the army of the Russian Federation creates a bridgehead for attack on Nikolaev, and behind it – on Odessa. Ukraine is still able to restrain Russian attacks.
